Maximizing My $30 Netgear Rebate Card

Back on January 6 of this year I ordered a 24 port Netgear Gigabit switch for our building which only cost $199 from NewEgg and also came with a $30 rebate which would be shipped as a $30 VISA debit card. Almost three months later the rebate card actually showed up last Monday so I thought I would try to spend it wisely for the department. Since my son was on Spring Break from his high school last week, he accompanied me to work last Wednesday and I appointed him the task of trying to maximizing the $30 debit card for "stuff" for the department without going over $30 (so we would not have to charge the rest to my university Pro-Card which would be a pain.) However, he looked at wireless mice (which I consider a waste for most cases here in the department) and other unneeded items since he considers supplies like wired mice, ethernet cables and blank CD's boring. In any case I wanted to see what I could find for a total of $30 to purchase for our department. I went to CDW-G where we get a nice discount and free shipping all the time and came up with the following items:

1) Imation 52x CD-R 50 Pack Spindle = $11.16
2) Kensington Mouse In A Box USB = 2 x $6.66 = $13.32
3) Tripp Lite 5' Blue CAT6 Gigabit Patch Cable = 2 x $2.63 = $5.26
Total: $29.74 (so I wasted 26 cents of the rebate!)

So for the $199.99 I used to purchase the 24 port switch, I not only received the much needed new switch, but I received a spindle of 50 more CD-R's (I only had about 10 left on my current spindle), two more cheap but solid mice to give to students and staff who need one, and two CAT6 cables to use on that brand new switch we purchased! That seemed like a good deal to help maintain the IT needs of the occupants of the soon to be named Scott Rudolph Hall on the Washington University campus. Who says we do not use money efficiently here on campus?

Don't forget to save and re-use the cards to pop the rear bezel releases in the white iMacs. Netgear cards are perfect for this. If you aren't recycling, you aren't maximizing value - or being a true cheapskate. /w
